NGC4939 Galaxy in Virgo

NGC4939 is a  fine SA(s)bc-typed and 5,5′ × 3,0′ sized galaxy of apparent magnitude 11,5mag.It is located 134 mio.light years away in the constellation of Virgo.

Its point-like center reveals NGC4939 to be a Seyfert type II galaxy with a very active nucleus.

Lately 4 supernova events could be observed in NGC1739: SN 1968X, SN 1973J, SN 2008aw (Typ-II) und SN 2014B (Typ-IIP).

William Herschel dicovered NGC4939 in 1786.
